Sharna L. Striar, M.S.N., Ph.D.,
R.N. is a nationally known expert in the area of human sexuality,
intimacy, and relationships.
Over the course of thirty-five years, Dr.
Striar has studied and taught at leading institutions in her field, including
the University of Michigan, Hunter College, and Seton Hall University, has
lectured extensively, is the author of dozens of articles, and has been a
frequent expert guest on national radio and television.
She is a Psychiatric Nurse, Certified Sex
Therapist, and Psychotherapist, and is also trained in neuro-linguistic
programming and in hypnotherapy.
Dr. Striar is a graduate of Boston
University. She earned her Masters in Psychiatric Nursing from Hunter College
in New York, and her Doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of
Michigan at Ann Arbor, while simultaneously serving at the University Hospital.
Dr. Striar completed post-doctorate studies
in human sexuality in the Department of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical
College, directed by Dr. Helen Singer-Kaplan. Dr. Striar then joined Dr.
Kaplan’s private practice as an Associate Clinician and project director for Dr.
Kaplan’s extensive study of her patient population.
Dr. Striar has served as Assistant
Professor in the Schools of Nursing at the University of Michigan and at Seton
Hall University, where she has lectured in group dynamics, leadership, and
conflict resolution. She has also served as an Adjunct Associate Professor in
the Department of Psychology at Hunter College.
Dr. Striar is author of more than a dozen
scholarly articles on sexuality, intimacy, and relationships, and has written
extensively for the lay audience as well. She has been invited to hospitals
around the country to train nursing staff in communication and organizational
leadership skills.
She has served on the World Psychiatric
Association Task Force on Comprehensive Treatment and Management of Sexual
Health and Disorders, and was a member of the Provider Review Committee for
Magellan Behavioral Care.
Dr. Striar has appeared on national radio
and television as an expert in the area of sexuality, romance, and
relationships. She has maintained a private practice for 30 years, the past 20
in New York City.
