Overview

There is a growing demand for further education and credentials in the area of addiction. You may have a professional and academic background similar to our current candidates. Are you a licensed addiction professional with a bachelor or master’s degree who has taken professional and continuing education courses?  If you are, you may have completed all the needed coursework for your master’s or doctorate.  An examination may be required to convert this coursework into graduate credit.

The faculty are practicing professionals who possess at least one earned doctorate and who are good communicators.  Therefore, both theory and practice are integrated for the education that is required for your professional growth and recognition.

Accreditation and Affiliations

International University for Graduate Studies is accredited by the Ministry of Education of the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis, a Caribbean nation that has been a member of the British Commonwealth since 1983. Accreditation from a sovereign country is the highest form of accreditation. Official letters conferring and explaining our accreditation are posted on the University’s web site. IUGS is included in the World Higher Education Database, maintained by the International Association of Universities. Founded in 1950, the IAU is an NGO maintaining formal associate relations with UNESCO and is listed online at http://www.unesco.org/iau/onlinedatabases/list.html.

In addition, the University has:

• Approval for tuition reimbursement and payment from major U.S. hospitals, unions and government and private institutions;

• Co-sponsored “Continuing Education Programmes” with U.S. and International certification and licensing agencies and organisations;

• Graduates and current candidates who are practitioners, administrators and educators, and who hold and have held key positions in private and public organisations.

 

How Long does it take to earn the degree?

After an evaluation of prior learning (PLA) and the completion of all the required coursework, a committed and dedicated student can graduate the programme within eighteen months.

 

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) Degree Requirements

  • A relevant master's degree

  • Documented pertinent professional experience

  • Certification or licensure as an alcohol and drug counselor

  • 81 credits*, which include the following.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

  • 66 post-baccalaureate credits* graduate credits in transfer.

  • An eight-day residency at the University in St. Kitts, West Indies (3 Credits).

  • A Dissertation and Oral Defense (12 Credits).

 

Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.)

  • 72 post-baccalaureate credits* graduate credits in transfer, prior to, or after admission.

  • An eight-day residency at the University in St. Kitts, West Indies (3 Credits).

  • A written project and an oral examination (6 Credits).

 

Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Science (M.S.) Degree Requirements

  • A relevant bachelor's degree

  • Documented pertinent professional experience

  • Certification or licensure as an alcohol and drug counselor

  • 36 credits*, which include the following.

Master of Arts (M.A.)

  • 27 post-baccalaureate credits* graduate credits in transfer, prior to, or after admission.

  • An eight-day residency at the University in St. Kitts, West Indies (3 Credits).

  • A thesis and an oral defense or a written project and an oral examination (6 Credits).

 

Master of Science (M.S.)

  • 27 post-baccalaureate credits* graduate credits in transfer, prior to, or after admission.

  • An eight-day residency at the University in St. Kitts, West Indies (3 Credits).

  • A thesis and an oral defense or a written project and an oral examination (6 Credits).

* All Relevant graduate credits including those credits from master's degrees, as well as approved graduate level continuing education coursework.

** Includes advertisement, classes, library fees, seminars, workshops, the written and oral examination and the dissertation review.

*** An additional dissertation mentor fee of $1,000 is required for Ph.D. candidates.

**** An additional mentor fee of $500 is required for masters candidates writing a thesis.
